ALL IRELAND HEALTH STUDY (2009)

  •       The study was organised by UCD

·       Local Traveller women were trained as peer researchers to carry out this study.

·       Co-ordinated locally by the Women & Family Health Initiative.

·      Some results from this study:-

  • 10,618 families enumerated - 9056 in ROI & 1562 in NI

  • Only 1% of Travellers live over 65 years compared to 13% of the general population

  • Traveller men life expectancy is 61.7 years - is at a similar level to the general male population of 1947

  • Traveller males have 3.7 times the mortality of males in the general population

  • Traveller women have a life expectancy of 71 years - is at a similar level to the general female population of 1960

  • Traveller women have 3.1 times the mortality of females in the general population

  • Traveller infants today are 3.6 times more likely to die than infants in the general population

  • Suicide rate in male Travellers is 6.6 times higher than the general population

ONGOING TRAVELLER PROGRAMMES 2011

  • Presently 8 Traveller women & 16 Traveller children from Killeavy Site are participating in  a 6 week personal development programme in Killeavy Youth Club. This is a partnership with Reach, Belong & Safe & Well Project.

 

  • 'Crushna Munia' Traveller Group meet weekly in Bessbrook Community Centre on Wednesday mornings from 10.30am - 12.00noon.  A range of activities and programmes are available at this group session ie. health & well being, relaxation, cooking skills etc.  All travellers welcome.

 

              

      PREVIOUS PROJECT WITH TRAVELLERS IN SOUTH ARMAGH

  PHARMACY PROJECT

·       A partnership with Meigh Pharmacy and local community pharmacist Richard Garvey with funding from Community Pharmacist Partnership, a Health Awareness Project was delivered on Killeavy Traveller Site.

·   5 Health Information Sessions and a Traveller Needs Assessment.

·   Breast Cancer Awareness Session & Health Checks

LITERACY & NUMERACY 2009

  • 8 travellers completed a Literacy & Numeracy (26wk Essential Skills Programme) in Bessbrook Community Centre, delivered by Southern Regional College LEA programme

DRAMA WORKSHOPS 2009

·  Patricia Downey, Artistic Director with 'Spanner in the Works Theatre Company' worked with a group of Travellers in Bessbrook Community and developed a 'drama sketch' addressing issues relevant to Travellers lives (2009)
